Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Hargis, Kentucky. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers available in cities across the Nation to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body is required. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair testing requirements.

In recent years, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle testing. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists demand hair drug tests instead of common urine tests. Hair follicle tests are employed by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers. A primary advantage is the extended detection period, lasting up to 90 days, collected under observant processes, making it nearly cheat-proof. However, urine tests remain most accurate for recent 5-day drug use detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands preserve a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers an estimated detection window of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising around 200 hair strands (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, extended panels, and/or tests requiring more than 10 panels, it's recommended to gather 150mg of the sample. We advise weighing the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. 'Head hair' pertains solely to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any extra details not included within an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid assay for drugs of abuse. Although it is an economical means of dismissing drug usage in most samples, a positive screening necessitates further confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive Screening samples must undergo secondary validation.

For presumptive positives in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the sample and processed for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at reduced concentrations compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is considered the most complex method.

Any confirmed positive results from the screening are further validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing if required. The complete procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can reveal drug use over a 90-day span, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: Altering a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring the results' precision.
  • Offers chronological data: It reveals a timeline of drug use across a duration, not solely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Detection in hair takes approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair pigmentation and unique growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing drug screening methods, hair follicle testing in Hargis, KY, offers notable advantages over traditional urine tests. Firstly, hair follicle examinations provide superior detection accuracy, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of an individual's substance history. This makes hair testing highly reliable, giving employers and other entities the confidence needed in selecting suitable candidates or making important decisions.

Moreover, the credibility of hair follicle examinations extends to their immunity to common forms of tampering. With urine tests, individuals may attempt to manipulate results; however, hair tests inherently resist such interference. This integrity signifies why hair testing is often preferred by those requiring definitive and trustworthy outcomes.

Extended Detection Window

In Hargis, KY, one of the standout benefits of hair follicle testing is its prolonged detection window. This extensively stretches over approximately 90 days, offering a complete perspective on a person's substance intake history. Such an extensive timeframe allows employers to ascertain a more in-depth understanding of an employee or applicant’s habits, vital for making informed personnel decisions.

This broader overview surpasses that of traditional testing methods, which are limited to recent use. The capacity to uncover long-term patterns of substance abuse can be crucial in sectors where safety and integrity are paramount. Therefore, hair testing becomes an invaluable tool for organizations seeking comprehensive insights.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Hargis, KY, one of the most significant advantages of hair follicle testing is its tamper-resistant nature. This reliability stems from the natural permanency of drug traces within the hair, which resists attempts at obfuscation. Whether for employers, legal agents, or health professionals, this aspect of hair testing assures that the test outcomes will reflect genuine substance use patterns without bias or external alteration.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
