Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hesler, Kentucky. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing spans nationwide locations capable of providing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffice. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other custom testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence recently as a method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts frequently choose this over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests serve zero-tolerance workplace policies, courts, and probationers. Their advantage lies in a more extended detection window of up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that is virtually fraud-proof. Despite this, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent resource for identifying substance use, including drugs and alcohol. It captures a prolonged history of these substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands of hair. When obtained near the scalp, it can reveal a detection window of up to roughly three months for drugs and alcohol. The collection of hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a corresponding amount of body hair can be utilized. Scalp hair specifically refers to hair on the head, while body hair includes other types of hair (for example, facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample within a lab’s system. It involves confirming the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. It’s a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use for most samples; however, a positive screening result requires confirmatory testing for legal admittance. Samples that test presumptively positive in screening need further confirmation.

For samples that yield a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for the Extraction process. This stage involves extracting drugs from the hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirming any positive screening outcome occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection duration.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests provide more reliable results due to the difficulty in cheating.
  • Historical usage data: This method reveals patterns of drug consumption over a duration, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth may impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the evaluation is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
