Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hollyvilla, Kentucky. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, with facilities in every city across the nation, capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head's crown or body will suffice. Hair tests can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug testing procedures. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts favor a hair drug test over the typical urine test. This type of test is utilized by organizations with no-tolerance drug policies, legal systems, and those on probation. The main advantage is the extended detection timeframe—up to 90 days—collected under observation, making it nearly foolproof. For detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of roughly three months for alcohol and drug traces. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG assessments, extra features, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for evaluating the specimen weight. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in the lab includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary step of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step consists of ensuring the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a rapid preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be permissible in legal proceedings. Presumptive positive samples in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. At this stage, drug substances are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug assays the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation, as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection interval: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to deception: It is highly challenging to manipulate the results of a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical dataset: It provides a chronological pattern of drug usage rather than merely detecting recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drug traces take about 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can affect the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When compared with traditional urine testing in Hollyvilla, KY, hair follicle testing emerges as a superior choice. Hair tests excel by delivering enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
