Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Hustonville, Kentucky. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis and has facilities across the country, including every city, that can perform hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body may be utilized. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other assessments.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more commonplace in drug screening. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are chosen by employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation programs. The key advantage of hair testing is an extended detection window of approximately 90 days, collected under direct observation, offering a secure mechanism difficult to tamper with. For recent drug use, within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the definitive choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains evidence of substance use over time by embedding biomarkers in its fibers as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for substances such as drugs and alcohol. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping the sample is convenient.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, provides 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirming. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary procedure of incorporating a sample into the laboratory’s system. This process ensures the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any missing data entry outside an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial swift evaluation for drug abuse. While it economically eliminates drug use for most samples, a positive screening must be substantiated to stand in legal proceedings. Samples that are presumptively positive during screening demand a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), a process rendering hair drug screening particularly complex.

Positive screening confirmations are carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Before testing, all presumptively positive samples are cleansed as required. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug consumption up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to cheating: It is notably hard to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing accuracy of outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It traces drug use patterns over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: It takes around 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair follicle tests and traditional urine tests in Hustonville, KY reveals marked benefits for hair analysis. While urine may capture short-term use, hair delivers superior detection accuracy over an extended timeframe. Moreover, hair testing offers enhanced reliability with fewer opportunities for result manipulation, establishing it as a robust alternative for comprehensive substance evaluation.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Hustonville, KY provides an extended detection window, tracing drug use for up to 90 days. This range affords employers a more thorough appraisal of a potential hire's or employee's substance-use record. By encompassing a longer span, it delivers a wide-reaching insight that urine tests, limited to recent use, simply cannot.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Hustonville, KY are designed to be a tamper-resistant method of screening, sharply reducing the chances of sample adulteration. This leads to reliable and unquestionable results, providing organizations confidence and peace of mind in the authenticity and integrity of each screening conducted.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
