In Indian Hills, Kentucky, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analyses. Whether the test is for drugs or alcohol, our focus on hair testing ensures comprehensive results available in all cities across the country. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from any body part may be tested, and results can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly utilized hair follicle analysis. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and addiction counselors prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by those enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and probation services due to their extended detection window of approximately 90 days and their resistance to tampering. For recent drug use within five days, however, urine tests remain the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a formidable method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft, hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage. When sourced near the scalp, hair can give an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, equating to around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and verification purposes. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing process involves four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes ensuring proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid test for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to exclude drug usage for most samples, any positive findings require confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples that are presumed positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing notably challenging.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumed positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Resistance to cheating: It is exceedingly challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Detection in hair takes roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair coloration and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Indian Hills, KY, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests due to its advanced detection capabilities. While traditional tests only capture recent usage, hair analysis offers a broader timeline, ensuring higher accuracy and reliability. This superior method supports policies demanding strict adherence to drug-free standards and offers enhanced assurance against tampering attempts.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
