Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle substance testing in Jamestown, Kentucky. For those in need of drug or alcohol analysis via hair samples, our expertise is unmatched and we have facilities nationwide, including your city, to conduct these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is recommended for the scalp, or body hair can typically suffice. Hair tests are available for a variety of substances including drugs and alcohol, or other customizable options.

Hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly favored in recent times as a method for detecting substance use. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are choosing it over the traditional urine analysis. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation cases depend on hair follicle tests. They offer the advantage of a longer detection timeline, up to 90 days, collected under direct supervision and are quite difficult to tamper with. For immediate past usage, within five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended-term record of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers within the strands. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug and alcohol use up to three months prior. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for testing. For EtG, additional analysis, or tests over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferred. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is an alternative. “Head hair” specifically denotes scalp hair, while “body hair” includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory test process involves four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary incorporation of a sample within a lab’s framework. This process checks the sample’s seal and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary swift assessment for drug abuse presence. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive screen results warrant confirmation for court suitability. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is sourced from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab operation from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests reveal drug use extendable to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter span.
  • Manipulation resistance: Cheating in hair drug tests is highly improbable, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Records usage patterns: It can illustrate drug use trends over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent usage: A period of 5-7 days is needed for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur more cost compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color differences and individual hair growth disparities may impact metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite being frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
