Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Johnetta, Kentucky. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair analysis ensures that we can facilitate testing in numerous locations across the nation. Generally, testing requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair samples can be evaluated for substances, alcohol/ETG, or with other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug testing has risen in popularity in recent times. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists prefer it over traditional urine testing methods. This test is favored by organizations enforcing strict drug-free policies and by legal authorities for probationary individuals. One primary advantage is its extended detection window, typically up to three months. However, for recent usage within five days, the urine test remains the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged history due to biomarkers being embedded in the strands of hair as they grow. When collected from near the scalp, hair analysis can offer approximately a 3-month window for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step that incorporates a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a rapid initial check for substance abuse. Although cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If Screening results suggest a positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for the Extraction process. At this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair at lesser concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug screening methodologies.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are used for Confirming positive results. All samples deemed presumptive positive are cleansed before Confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to forge: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data provider: Offers a pattern of drug use over time, not just immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days for detection in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variation: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
