At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Junction City, Kentucky. Whether you need alcohol or drug testing, we specialize in hair analysis and have testing centers in cities across the nation to accommodate your needs. Typically, hair from either the head or body is required, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches. Hair tests can detect substances like drugs or alcohol/ETG and can be customized as needed.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for substance detection in recent times. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals increasingly prefer hair testing over urine testing. It's the go-to choice for organizations with strict drug policies, courts, and probation scenarios. The advantages of hair testing include a longer detection period of up to 90 days. It's collected under observation, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain most accurate for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-term drug and alcohol history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Sampling hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily transportable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 hair strands (the approximate thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, it is specific to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types, such as facial or axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing process is comprised of four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a laboratory’s records. This step includes checking that the sample is correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and fulfilling any additional data entry that isn’t covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary fast assessment for substances of abuse. While it provides an economical method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive outcome in Screening must be verified to be valid in legal settings. Any samples indicating a positive result in Screening necessitate further validation through confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and set aside for Extraction. At this point, the drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug analysis is notably challenging.

To verify any positive results in Screening, Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is performed. Any samples indicated as presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation, as required. The process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can trace drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests present a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Immunity to deception: Hair drug tests are arduous to falsify, thus yielding more precise results.
  • Provides usage patterns: It offers insights into drug use behaviors over time rather than limiting to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection of drugs via hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: In general, hair drug tests incur higher costs than alternative drug-testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels detectable in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
