Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Keavy, Kentucky. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, we specialize in hair analysis and boast testing facilities nationwide, all ready to carry out hair assessments. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required, sourced from the head or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Over recent years, drug testing methodologies have increasingly adopted hair follicle testing. Many employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over the conventional urine screenings. Hair analysis is favored by organizations with strict drug-free policies, the courts, and those under legal supervision due to its extended detection window, nearly impossible tampering, observed sample collection, and up to 90-day usage history. Urine testing remains the most accurate for detecting very recent substance use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive timeline of alcohol and other drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can indicate a detection period of up to approximately three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to adulterate, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for assessments and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We advocate weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be gathered. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair pertains to all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory treatment of a drug test outcome involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This involves confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening encompasses an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation for it to be admissible in court. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening demand a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration as compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is highly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
