Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions in Kenvir, Kentucky. For those needing a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our specialization lies in hair testing with centers across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Typically, a hair sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown but may use body hair. Tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or personalized testing options.

In recent times, the adoption of hair follicle drug tests for detecting substances has increased. Many businesses, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests support zero-tolerance policies in workplaces and are integral for those on probation. A primary advantage is the extended detection window, up to 90 days, making it difficult to manipulate compared to urine tests, which are more reliable for detection within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has become recognized as an efficient method for identifying substance and alcohol use. Hair offers an extended retrospective of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. When sampled near the scalp, hair can provide a detection time frame of up to around 3 months for alcohol and narcotics. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair specimen, comprising approximately 200 strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil), nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for evaluation and validation. For EtG outputs, supplementary assessments, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If head hair is not accessible, a proportionate amount of body hair may be substituted. In our context, head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in processing a drug test report in the laboratory comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is concerned with the preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory setup. It includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input that an electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening embodies an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While serving as a cost-effective strategy to preclude drug usage on most samples, a positive screening outcome must be validated for court admissibility. Samples that are initially positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

For samples initially positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample for the Extraction process. At this stage, drug extraction from hair occurs at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug analysis the most demanding technique.

Positive screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate results: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby providing more reliable results.
  • Delivers historical insight: These tests offer a trajectory of substance use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Does not identify recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days before drugs become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments usually cost more compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
