Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Knifley, Kentucky. Specializing in both hair and alcohol tests, we operate facilities across all major cities nationwide capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or elsewhere can be utilized. Hair testing can reveal the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized substances.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methodologies. Employers, legal courts, and substance abuse experts are increasingly favoring this approach over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle assessments support strict no-drug policies and provide a broader detection span—up to 90 days. They are conducted under observation, making deception nearly impossible. Nevertheless, for substance use detected within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow, hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and other substances. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use for up to three months. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch specimen consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the nearest scalp region will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for analysis and corroboration. For additional tests like EtG or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. If head hair is not accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be utilized. Head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and underarm hair.

Process Summary

The drug testing process within the laboratory involves four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the introductory handling of a sample within a lab system. This process ensures that the sample is properly sealed and delivered, incorporates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary method for spotting substance abuse. While it offers an economical means of excluding drug use in many samples, its positive results require validation to be legally defensible. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample for Extraction. This process extracts drugs from hair at much reduced concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair testing a complex procedure.

Verification of positive screening outcomes is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that are initially positive are cleansed before final confirmation as needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug assessment:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have more limited detection periods.
  • Hard to falsify: The accuracy of hair tests is bolstered by the difficulty in cheating these tests.
  • Historic usage data: Hair tests offer insights into patterns of long-term drug use, unlike tests that only capture recent use.

Constraints:

  • Can't catch recent usage: Detection in hair takes approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair tests are generally more costly compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth variance can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While technically called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand itself, not the underlying follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Knifley, KY, hair follicle testing proves superior to traditional urine analysis. This method excels in detecting substance use with greater accuracy, offering reliable results even when urine tests might fail. Hair tests are less susceptible to tampering and provide a clearer picture of an individual’s drug history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
