Accredited Drug Testing offers full-range hair follicle drug testing services in Lewisport, Kentucky. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis, with facilities available in every city across the nation capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient. Hair examinations can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored assessment options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common practice in substance testing. Various employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict drug-free guidelines, legal institutions, and probationary programs. The key advantage lies in its ability to detect drug use over a longer term, generally up to 90 days, with a closely monitored collection process that is nearly invulnerable to tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the standard for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers in their fibers, providing a detailed history of alcohol and drug use over time. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over a period of up to roughly three months. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and transporting samples is simple.

A 1.5-inch segment, consisting of approximately 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) closest to the scalp, supplies 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome entails four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This process checks that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening is an economical means to rule out drug consumption in most instances, a positive result must be verified to stand in legal settings. Samples that produce a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

If the Screening phase yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves removing drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is particularly challenging.

Positive screening findings are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation if required. The laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection timelines.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insights: Offers a view of drug usage patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand rather than the scalp’s hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
