Located in Lola, KY, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair analysis for drug and alcohol detection, our nationwide centers, including those in every major city, provide expert collection. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the scalp or body. Available tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored alternative options.

The trend in recent years has leaned towards hair follicle drug testing, becoming the preferred choice over traditional urine tests among employers, legal bodies, and addiction counselors. Favored by organizations with stringent drug-free policies, courts, and parolees, hair testing offers a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, using a monitored collection method that is extremely difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting substance use in the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective instrument for recognizing drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. Gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month timeframe for detection of alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately equal to the circumference of a #2 pencil), close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial treatment of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any required data tasks not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a preliminary fast check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be permissible in court. Any samples with presumptive positives found in Screening need additional confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is retrieved from the initial sample and set for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The full laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and endorsement to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is particularly hard to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring the results are more reliable.
  • Historical evidence: It provides a record of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle drug testing in Lola, KY outperforms traditional urine tests in detection accuracy and reliability. This testing method provides superior results, capturing a more complete picture of substance use over time. While urine tests can detect recent usage, hair follicle tests reveal patterns over several months.

The reliability of hair follicle testing stems from its extended detection window. Employers benefit from a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history, unlike the limited snapshot provided by urine analysis.

Extended Detection Window

In Lola, KY, hair follicle testing is pivotal for its extended detection window of up to 90 days. This method grants employers an extensive insight into a candidate's or employee's substance habits, surpassing the shorter time frames of other testing techniques.

This lengthy detection period captures a broader spectrum of usage history, enabling employers to make informed decisions based on comprehensive data. Such insight aids in fostering a safer workplace environment by acknowledging patterns over time.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle drug tests in Lola, KY are significantly more tamper-resistant than other testing methods. The collection process is highly monitored, minimizing opportunities for adulteration and ensuring that the results remain trustworthy and defensible.

This robust method provides peace of mind to all stakeholders, as it is nearly impossible to manipulate the sample. Employers can rely on the accuracy and authenticity of the test results, maintaining integrity in the testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
