Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lost Creek, Kentucky. If you're seeking a drug or alcohol test via hair sampling, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this method, featuring testing centers across cities Nationwide capable of executing hair tests. Generally, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for testing. Hair samples can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Lately, drug testing procedures have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Various employers, legal courts, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals under probation frequently use hair follicle drug tests. A significant advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection period, often up to 90 days, conducted in a supervised process, making it nearly foolproof. However, for drug use detection within the recent 5 days, urine tests remain the precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for detecting the usage of alcohol and drugs. Hair captures a long-term history of substance use by encasing drug biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collected from near the scalp, it can reveal substance use for about a 90-day period. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily falsified, and can be shipped with ease.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches and approximately 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional substances, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" signifies scalp hair alone, whereas "body hair" includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main stages of laboratory processing for a drug test result entail Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial steps of integrating a sample into a laboratory's database. This phase involves checking that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial assessment for commonly abused drugs. Though Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use for the bulk of samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court acceptability. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. At this point, drugs are separated from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the hardest methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, leading to more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair tests.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing procedures.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variability can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not on the follicle situated under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
