Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Lowes, Kentucky. For individuals in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing provides specialized hair testing services. We operate testing centers throughout the nation capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent times. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests instead of the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests cater to employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. A significant advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window which can reveal drug use up to 90 days and is difficult to tamper with. However, for identifying recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline by capturing biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair fiber. Hair collected near the scalp provides a detection window of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it's advisable to have 150mg. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial steps of integrating a sample into the lab's system. This step verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry necessary beyond what is provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary, swift assessment for drug use. Although it's an economical way to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be validated to be legally acceptable. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods like urine or oral fluid testing, making hair drug screening the most challenging procedure.

Every positive screening result is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo a wash before confirmation as necessary. The full process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly reviewed in accordance with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have shorter detection spans.
  • Resistant to manipulation: It's significantly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in Lowes, KY due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests are often used for immediate detection, hair tests provide a more comprehensive analysis over an extended period. This prolonged period allows employers to gain a comprehensive insight into the substance use history of an applicant or employee. Such detailed detection can reveal patterns and tendencies, providing employers with the information necessary for a safer workplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
