Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Lynch, Kentucky. Should you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with facilities across all U.S. cities to administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body suffice. Hair assays can detect substances, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent for drug evaluations. A growing number of employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are favored among employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and individuals on probation. Their key advantage is a substantially longer detection window for drugs—often up to 90 days—collected under supervised conditions, minimizing the risk of tampering. However, for detecting drugs within a 5-day timeframe, urine tests remain unmatched.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. It's easy to collect hair, somewhat challenging to falsify, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp produces 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests beyond 10 panels, it is advised to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equal quantity of body hair may be used. Head hair solely refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process ensures that the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and adds any additional data not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-effective means to rule out drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed to be legally admissible. Samples yielding a presumptive positive result during Screening require further confirmation.

In cases where a sample shows tentative positive results in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Any positive result from screening is verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Tampering with a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronic data provision: It can reveal a drug usage pattern over time, rather than just capturing recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: The test is often referred to as a "hair follicle test", though it actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lynch, KY, hair follicle testing offers superior detection accuracy compared to urine tests. Unlike urine analyses, which may only detect recent substance use, hair tests provide a longer detection window, up to 90 days, uncovering past drug usage more reliably. Their robustness against manipulation has made them the preferred choice for employers and authorities seeking comprehensive and dependable assessments, enhancing precise drug use history checks.

Extended Detection Window

Employing hair follicle tests in Lynch, KY provides an extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, capturing a comprehensive history of drug use. The advantage of this method lies in its ability to offer a detailed view of an individual’s substance habits over an extensive period, aiding employers and organizations in making informed decisions about potential hires or current employees, fostering a drug-free workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Lynch, KY significantly mitigate risks of sample tampering, ensuring authenticity in results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
