Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing in Mentor, Kentucky. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialization in hair testing is backed by nationwide and local centers equipped to conduct hair tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is typically required. These tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a prominent method for drug screening in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are increasingly opting for this type of test over standard urine analyses. The key advantage of hair testing lies in its extended detection timeline, reaching up to 90 days and collected under observation, making it nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use for up to approximately 90 days. Gathering hair samples is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hairs (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen's weight. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. When discussing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Outline

The primary steps in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any extra data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening offers an economical approach to excluding drug usage in most samples, any sample that tests positive in screening must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair in far lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which adds to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timespan.
  • Hard to game: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, resulting in more accurate outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: Offers a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine tests in Mentor, KY, the former boasts superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests offer a wider detection window, allowing for a more detailed analysis of an individual's drug history.

Unlike urine tests, hair testing reduces opportunities for evasion or tampering. This level of security in testing provides significant advantages, making hair-based methods more appealing for those enforcing zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Mentor, KY benefit from hair follicle testing through its extended detection window, capturing drug use history up to 90 days. This approach offers a long-term view of an individual's substance habits.

The comprehensive nature of this testing makes it ideal for assessing compliance over time, differing starkly from shorter-range tests, like urine, enabling a more thorough review.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
