Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services throughout Middleburg, Kentucky. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is supported by various testing facilities across all cities nationwide that can conduct this test efficiently. Typically, you must have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of your head, or body hair can be used in certain instances. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific testing needs.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Many organizations, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse professionals now prioritize hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial courts, and probation services due to their advantage: a detection timeframe that extends up to 90 days, completed in a supervised collection process, making them nearly foolproof. However, for drug use within the most recent five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers in the hair strand's fibers as it grows. A sample collected near the scalp can provide a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair samples are straightforward to obtain, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches in length and consisting of about 200 strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for test screening and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. We advocate for the use of a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample weight accurately. If scalp hair is non-existent, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial sample processing into a laboratory's system. It involves verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to hold up in legal settings. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening do require a subsequent confirmation.

For samples with a presumptively positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than those in methods like urine or oral fluid, which is why hair drug screening is among the most complex methodologies.

The Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Protracted detection span: Hair drug tests offer a detection period of up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are resilient to cheating, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to register in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently dubbed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
