Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Moorland, Kentucky. If you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in this method, with facilities across all cities nationwide ready to conduct hair tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is typically necessary. Hair tests allow for the examination of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

In recent times, drug screening methods have increasingly turned to hair follicle testing. Many workplaces, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug testing over the traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and probation services commonly utilize hair testing. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window for drug use, typically up to 90 days, through an observed collection process, making it highly tamper-resistant. However, for detecting drug use within the past five days, urine testing remains the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug use. The hair captures a long-term usage record by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it offers roughly up to a three-month detection period for substances. It's easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to mail.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches and containing about 200 strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) taken close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is preferred. Using a jeweler's scale is advised to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When we refer to head hair, it specifies only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in laboratory processing of drug test samples: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial admission of a sample into the lab system, which includes ensuring the sample has been sealed and dispatched correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening involves conducting a preliminary inspection for drugs of abuse. Although it's a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome here requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that test positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive outcome from the screening is performed using methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection spans.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is very hard, making the results more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals drug use patterns over an extended period, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: There's a delay of about 5-7 days before drugs are traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Individual differences such as hair color and growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is misleading, as the test actually examines the hair strand, not the root beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Moorland, KY, the superiority of hair follicle testing over traditional urine testing is evident. With a longer detection window, it offers a more extensive history of substance use, surpassing urine tests in accuracy and dependability.

Companies and legal authorities prefer hair testing because it delivers incontrovertible results. Unlike urine tests, hair tests cannot be easily manipulated, enhancing their reliability.

Extended Detection Window

One of the leading benefits of hair follicle testing in Moorland, KY, is its extended detection window. With the ability to trace drug use for up to 90 days, this method offers a comprehensive overview of an individual's drug history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
