Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Nina, Kentucky. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair examinations, with testing locations available nationwide. Typically, hair from the crown or body—measuring 1.5 to 2 inches—is needed. Analyses can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, conducting drug tests increasingly involves a hair follicle test. More employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by those enforcing strict drug policies. The advantage of such tests lies in their extended detection timeline, spanning up to 90 days, and the method's near-immunity to tampering. Yet for recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely acknowledged as a potent resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can present a comprehensive history of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of an actively growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, it can reveal up to a three-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t obtainable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we are referring exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the sample’s initial processing into a lab’s system. This step verifies that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid check for drug abuse. While an economical means to rule out drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation before it is acceptable in legal proceedings. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the hardest to execute.

The confirmation of any positive screen is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed as required before confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to evade: Cheating a hair drug test proves very difficult, ensuring greater accuracy in the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a pattern of substance use over an extended period, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis targets the hair strand and not the scalp’s hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Nina, KY, hair follicle testing demonstrates superiority over urine testing by offering enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair tests reveal a more comprehensive history of drug use, providing a valuable tool for employers and legal systems. This superior method underscores the importance of accurate and reliable drug testing.

The distinctive advantage of hair follicle testing is its ability to identify substances over an extended period. Employers benefit from the detailed history of usage, setting hair tests apart as a more effective drug detection method compared to urine tests, which are limited to recent consumption.

Extended Detection Window

With the ability to uncover drug use up to 90 days prior, hair follicle testing in Nina, KY offers an extensive detection window that urine tests cannot match. This prolonged period allows for a comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance history, providing peace of mind to employers who are evaluating candidates or monitoring employees.

The hair test's extended reach in detecting drugs offers a clearer picture of habitual versus single-use instances, vital for making informed decisions about employment or legal cases. This dependable detection window ensures a level of scrutiny unmatched by shorter-term tests.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Nina, KY, hair follicle testing stands out for its tamper-resistant nature, offering secure and dependable outcomes. The collection process is inherently difficult to compromise, thereby reducing the possibility of sample adulteration. This reliability ensures trustworthy results that can withstand scrutiny in both workplace and legal contexts.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
