Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Oil Springs, Kentucky. If you're seeking a drug or alcohol hair test, we specialize in these tests and have centers across all cities nationwide capable of performing them. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is utilized. Hair tests can be used to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over standard urine testing. These tests are chosen by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug use policies, the judicial system, and probationary individuals. The major advantage is the extended drug use detection window, usually up to 90 days, done through an observed process, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for detecting drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a long-term history of alcohol and other drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those above 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result follows four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial steps of processing a sample into a laboratory’s system. This covers ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial swift check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to potentially exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be considered valid in legal situations. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening do require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples are washed prior to confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use up to 90 days, which is longer than urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, resulting in more precise results.
  • Provides chronological data: It can offer a timeline of drug use over a duration, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Oil Springs, KY, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. Traditional urine tests often fail to detect long-term substance use.
The advantages of hair testing include its non-intrusive nature and its ability to reveal a person's drug history over a span of 90 days, offering a comprehensive view rather than just a snapshot.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Oil Springs, KY benefit from the extended detection window of hair follicle testing. This method can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, significantly outperforming standard urine tests.
This long-term detection capability provides a clearer picture of an individual’s substance history, which is critical for making informed hiring or retention decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
