Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services throughout Panco, Kentucky. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in this field, offering testing centers across the nation, all equipped to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing needs.

In recent times, the preferred method for drug testing has increasingly become the hair follicle test. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and probationers, utilize hair drug tests. The main advantage is the extended detection window for drug use, usually up to 90 days, observed during collection, making it nearly impossible to falsify. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, it offers a prolonged historical record of substance use. Collecting hair close to the scalp allows for a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. It's both straightforward to collect and challenging to tamper with, in addition to being easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands, equivalent in size to a #2 pencil, when taken nearest to the scalp, provides approximately 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG extensions or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's recommended to weigh this on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair might be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Conversely, body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory examination for drug detection encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning represents the preliminary stage, integrating the sample into a lab’s system. This step confirms the sample's proper sealing and transport, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data submissions absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, cost-efficient examination for drugs, primarily to rule out usage in most samples. However, for a positive screen to hold up in a legal setting, confirmation is necessary. Samples that tentatively test positive in Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample shows a tentative positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. This phase retrieves drugs from hair at a concentration significantly lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), showcasing why hair drug testing is more intricate.

Confirmation of any tentative positive findings occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test tentatively positive undergo washing as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: With hair drug tests, drug consumption can be traced back as far as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which provide a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: The precision of hair drug tests stems from the difficulty in tampering with them.
  • Historical pattern: This method reveals drug use trends over time, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth.

Note: Despite being sometimes called "hair follicle tests," the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
