Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Pembroke, Kentucky. Whether you require a drug or alcohol test via hair follicle, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area with facilities across the nation. Normally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent years, replacing traditional urine tests for employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. These tests are valued by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies and by legal authorities like courts or probation officers. The key advantage of hair follicle testing lies in its extensive drug use detection window, reaching up to 90 days, along with a supervised collection process that makes results nearly foolproof. However, for drug use within the previous 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly become recognized as a strong method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When taken from near the scalp, it offers a detection span of up to roughly 3 months for identifying alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair imply scalp hair specifically, while body hair includes all other types (such as facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The main four steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of incorporating a sample into a lab’s dataset. It involves ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary method to check for drug presence. Although it is a cost-efficient way to negate drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples suspected as positive in Screening require further corroboration.

Should a sample indicate positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or saliva), which is why hair drug testing is considered the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive test result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire testing process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, which is considerably longer than urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Tampering with a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Indicates usage pattern: It can demonstrate a user's drug consumption pattern over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Compared to other methods, hair drug testing usually incurs a higher cost.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair pigmentation and individual growth differences can affect drug metabolite accumulation in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
