In Penrod, Kentucky, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have centers throughout the nation ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair samples can be tested for substances, alcohol/ETG or other tailor-made testing options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method for drug screening. Many employers, judiciary, and Substance Abuse experts choose hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation favor hair tests for their extended detection period, going up to 90 days. This process is built to be observed, ensuring less opportunity for fraud. However, for identifying recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the benchmark.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands, hair offers an extensive timeline of alcohol and drug consumption. When sampled close to the scalp, hair allows for approximately a three-month window to detect alcohol and drugs. This method of collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily shipped.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is an optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to check the specimen's weight. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. Referencing head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary step where a sample is integrated into a laboratory's system. This process confirms the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary assessment for illicit drugs. Although Screening efficiently rules out drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples presumed positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at a concentration markedly lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirming any positive results from screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Positive samples undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredits ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, contrasting with urine tests, which have shorter detection durations.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers usage history: Provides a drug use trajectory over an extended period, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth diversity can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
