Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Pine Mountain, Kentucky. If you require a drug or alcohol hair analysis, our expertise in hair testing ensures we can assist. We have facilities in numerous cities across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for testing. Our analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair test options.

Recently, the utilization of hair follicle drug tests in drug screening has surged. This method is increasingly preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, judiciary systems, and probationers rely on these tests. The main advantage of hair testing is in its extended drug detection timeframe of up to 90 days, captured through a monitored collection method that is highly tamper-proof. However, in identifying drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests still provide the utmost accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands preserve a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to collect hair samples, challenging to tamper with them, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, perfect for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the introductory processing of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This entails checking that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any extra data not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for abusive substances. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for courtroom acceptance. Any samples presumed positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample is suspected positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at a much lesser concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing a particularly challenging method.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can ascertain drug use up to 90 days prior, while urine testing has a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, leading to more credible results.
  • Delivers historical usage data: It provides a pattern of substance use over time, rather than recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Variability in results: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand and not the underlying hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Pine Mountain, KY provides a superior alternative to traditional urine tests. Benefits of Hair Testing:

  • Extended Detection: Captures drug use history up to 90 days.
  • Accuracy: Higher precision in substance detection.
  • Reliability: Less susceptible to tampering.
  • Unlike urine tests, hair analysis offers a more complete picture of one's substance use and ensures unbiased results.

Extended Detection Window

The primary allure of hair follicle testing in Pine Mountain, KY is its extended detection window for substance use. This method provides a complete overview of someone's drug history, often up to 90 days.

Employers value its capability to reveal prolonged substance use, offering a more holistic understanding of an employee's consumption habits over mere weeks as seen with urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
