In Plymouth Village, Kentucky, Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have nationwide centers ready to conduct tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often choose it over traditional urine tests. It's favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage is its longer detection window of up to 90 days, making it nearly foolproof, though for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly viewed as a significant method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the hair strands, hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug interactions. A sample taken near the scalp can reveal substance use history for roughly three months. Collection of hair samples is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (resembling the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for initial screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional configurations, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's best to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing lab process encompasses Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation stages.

Accessioning entails the preliminary entrance of a specimen into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample's correct sealing and transportation, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any manual data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody record.

Screening is a preliminary examination for illicit drugs. While Screening helps eliminate drug usage in most samples cost-effectively, any positive result must be verified for court validity. Samples showing preliminary positive results during Screening require further confirmation.

For samples with preliminary positive findings in Screening, additional hair is sourced from the initial batch and processed for Extraction. This step isolates drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug analysis as a challenging methodology.

Positive screening results are confirmed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The Laboratory procedures, from Accessioning through Confirmation, are scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical insight: Hair tests can reflect drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to manifest in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug test methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, excluding the follicle from the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Plymouth Village, KY, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine testing by offering superior detection periods and accuracy. While urine tests are reliable for recent usage, hair testing provides a 90-day analysis window, granting a broader view of an individual's substance use history.

The advantage of hair testing lies in its inability to be easily manipulated, ensuring that the integrity of the results remains intact. Employers benefit from this reliability, as it upholds the standards of maintaining a drug-free work environment with confidence and assurance.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Plymouth Village, KY, benefit from the extended detection window provided by hair follicle testing. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
