Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Repton, Kentucky. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is available through centers spanning all cities across the nation. A minimum hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is generally needed. These analyses can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific tests.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a standard method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse authorities favor this over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers often rely on hair tests. The advantage lies in its longer drug detection window, typically up to 90 days, with an observed sample collection process that's virtually tamper-proof. However, for identifying drug use in the past five days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It can reveal an extended history of substance intake by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When collected from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipment.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for analysis and confirmation. For more comprehensive testing, such as EtG, additional panels or tests beyond ten panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is advisable. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a comparable amount of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in laboratory processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies the correct sealing and safe shipment of the sample, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any additional information entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial assessment for substance use. Although Screening is economical for excluding drug use in most samples, any positive results require further confirmation to be legally valid. Presumptively positive samples during Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate additional hair from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair testing the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive outcome from Screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process, ranging from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical perspective: It offers a chronological overview of substance use over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand and not the scalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
