In Rolling Hills, Kentucky, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing. When it comes to drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, they excel and have facilities across all cities nationwide to administer the test. Generally requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp hair or body hair, these tests evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other testing preferences.

Lately, the use of hair follicle drug testing has surged in popularity. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are favoring hair analysis over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is crucial for companies with anti-drug policies, the legal system, and those on probation due to its extended detection period, which reaches up to 90 days, ensuring reliable observed collection. Yet, for immediate drug detection within 5 days, urine testing remains the most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a comprehensive timeline of substance use by securing biomarkers within the expanding hair fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe extending up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) extracted closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for assessment and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in the lab analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a specimen within a laboratory's framework. This procedure involves verifying proper sealing and dispatch of the sample, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening is an economical approach to eliminate the likelihood of drug usage for most samples, a positive screen needs validation for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate secondary verification.

Upon identifying a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), rendering hair drug analysis the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen in results is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to circumvent, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Chronic usage data: This testing method can illustrate a timeline of drug use over a duration, not limited to recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent usage: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing involves higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Influences such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
