Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle drug testing services in Saint John, Kentucky. For any hair drug or alcohol testing needs, we specialize in such tests and have centers across all cities nationwide equipped to conduct a hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Such tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests rather than traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation utilize these tests. A key advantage of hair testing is its extensive detection window, up to 90 days, with observed collection that is difficult to tamper with, making it almost foolproof. However, urine tests remain more accurate for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. It offers a long-term record of substance usage as it captures biomarkers within the hair strand fibers as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair can disclose a detection span of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (about a #2 pencil's size) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is deemed the ideal sample for both screening and confirmation. For tests including EtG, add-ons, and those beyond 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg of the specimen. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be obtained. "Head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of drug test outcomes are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial handling into the lab’s system. This phase includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Despite being a cost-efficient approach to screening the majority of samples for drug use, a positive screen result requires confirmation for court acceptance. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and set up for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring hair drug testing as the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. As required, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that possess a shorter detection duration.
  • Low likelihood of cheating: Hair drug testing is exceptionally challenging to deceive, thereby yielding more reliable results.
  • Paralleled historical insights: Capable of reflecting a pattern of drug use over a period, rather than recent incidence alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent drug use: Detection of drugs in hair typically requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other methods of drug testing.
  • Result discrepancy: Factors like hair color and unique differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is frequently misused; this test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
