In Sharpe, Kentucky, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If you're looking for a hair test for drugs or alcohol, we are experts in this field, with testing centers across the nation ready to facilitate the process. A sample taken from 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is generally required. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists often opt for hair over urine tests. This testing method supports zero-tolerance policies, aiding judicial decisions, and probationary conditions because it detects drug use for up to 90 days, almost eliminating the chances of tampering. However, for recent drug use detection, urine tests are still considered the most accurate method within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug exposure by capturing markers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) collected closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and verifying. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all additional hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes the following four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial processing of a specimen into a lab's system. This involves confirming the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for abused drugs. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug usage in most specimens, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples showing a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate secondary verification.

For samples showing a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can find drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to evade: Avoiding a hair drug test is quite challenging, making the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: It can indicate a drug use trend over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot indicate recent consumption: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences might impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While sometimes called "hair follicle tests," the test itself analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
