Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Shiloh, Kentucky. When a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing stands out, with facilities available in cities across the nation ready to conduct the examination. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown, or other body hair can be used. Hair analyses can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be tailored for other purposes.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been incorporated into drug screening processes. This shift is evident among employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals who opt for hair testing over traditional urine tests. Employers who enforce zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers frequently utilize these tests. The key advantage of hair tests is their prolonged detection window for substance use, usually up to 90 days, through a supervised collection technique, making it extremely challenging to falsify results. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use in the most recent five days, urine tests remain the most reliable choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair encapsulates a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the hair's growing fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This process involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial quick examination for drugs of misuse. Though cost-effective for eliminating drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than with other methodologies (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which provide a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficulty in deception: Hair drug tests are extremely hard to evade, leading to more precise results.
  • Yields historical insights: It can illustrate a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing variants.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Compared to urine testing, hair follicle testing in Shiloh, KY stands out for its superior accuracy and detection capabilities. The extended period over which hair tests can identify substances offers substantial advantages, making it the preferred option for many employers and professionals.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
