Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Shipley, Kentucky. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is extensive, with testing centers accessible across all U.S. cities. Generally, individuals should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on their head, or body hair can be used. Our hair tests cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

The adoption of hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent in recent times. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. This testing method is ideal for organizations enforcing strict drug-free policies, as well as the legal system. A key advantage is its extended detection window for drug use, spanning up to 90 days, and is recognized for its observed collection method, making it highly tamper-resistant. Despite this, urine tests remain most efficient for uncovering very recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a significant instrument for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, offering a long-term record of alcohol and other substances. When taken near the scalp, hair can deliver up to a roughly 3-month timeline for detecting alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent volume of body hair can be taken. The term "head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab's system. This process includes confirming that the specimen was securely sealed and properly shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in court. Any specimens that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a specimen test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug examination is the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as required. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair labeling and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can ascertain drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Cheating deterrence: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: It offers a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Ineffective for recent usage: Detection of drugs in hair takes around 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
