Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Siler, Kentucky. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing with locations across all cities Nationwide. For accuracy, hair should typically be 1.5 to 2 inches long on the crown, although body hair may serve in many cases. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has been more frequently adopted for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is ideal for zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals on probation due to its extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, and the almost impossible chance of tampering. However, urine tests remain most precise for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When gathered close to the head, it offers a detection span of about three months for substances. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch piece, encompassing approximately 200 hairs (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the head yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for analysis and validation. For EtG, special tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to assess the specimen’s weight. If head hair is not an option, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. When referring to head hair, it specifically means hair on the scalp. Body hair denotes every other type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab processing of a drug analysis result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the early processing of a specimen into a lab’s system, ensuring it was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing remaining data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid examination for substance misuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs validation to be admissible in court. Samples indicating a potential positive outcome in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample indicates a potential positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are separated from hair at much lower rates than in alternative methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is the most challenging method.

Confirmation of any positive screen is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with potential positive results are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 protocols.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Illegitimately passing a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers usage pattern: Demonstrates a pattern of substance use over a span of time, beyond merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Can't identify recent usage: Approximately 5-7 days are necessary for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Attributes such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The test discussed is often termed a "hair follicle test", but it assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Siler, KY, hair follicle testing is superior to traditional urine tests due to its high accuracy and reliability in detection. While urine tests are common, hair samples provide a more comprehensive look at substance history. The benefits showcased include a longer detection window and reduced sample tampering, offering an in-depth, reliable insight into an individual's drug use history.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle test boasts an impressive detection period of up to 90 days in Siler, KY, giving employers a bird’s-eye view of an individual's substance use over a prolonged timeframe. This extensive detection capability furnishes a more detailed and historical perspective on an employee or applicant’s drug use than conventional testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
