Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug examinations in Simpsonville, Kentucky. Whether in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field and has facilities nationwide, ready to administer the tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the scalp or body. Tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

In recent years, hair follicle testing has become more popular for drug detection. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over urine tests. These tests serve organizations with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and individuals under supervision. The key advantage is their extended detection period of up to 90 days, conducted with observation, making it resilient to tampering. For recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyses have become recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair holds an archival record of alcohol and substances by incorporating biomarkers into the strands' structure. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, not easily compromised, and straightforward for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or exams exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is advised to measure the sample on a jeweler’s balance. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a substance test result includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample in a lab's framework. This comprises validating the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any further data entry lacked by an electronic custody protocol.

Screening is an introductory rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening provides an economical method to eliminate substance use in most samples, any positive screen requires verification to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples that appear positive in Screening need a further confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging technique to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Samples appearing positive are cleansed prior to verification as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Verification is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standard certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine analyses have a shorter detection span.
  • High deterrence of cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inadequate for recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically incur more cost than alternate testing methods.
  • Result variations: Traits like hair color and personal growth differences may impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Even though often termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair shaft and not the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
