Located in Slade, Kentucky, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Our expertise in hair testing includes specialized alcohol and drug assessments, available at various centers nationwide. Typically, a hair sample from the crown (1.5 to 2 inches long) is required. These tests can analyze for drugs, alcohol, or offer custom options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a popular method for drug detection. Preferred over standard urine tests, it's increasingly required by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. This method benefits from a 90-day detection window, an observed collection process, and is difficult to tamper with. However, for recent usage (within 5 days), urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as a vital instrument for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture a historical record of alcohol and other substances by entrapping biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a substance detection timeline of up to three months. This process is straightforward to perform, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measurement of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which represents the optimal sample mass for initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary evaluations, or tests surpassing 10 panels, a suggested specimen weight of 150mg is recommended. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for measuring the specimen is advised. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent mass of body hair might be gathered. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the primary phase where a specimen is processed into a lab's system. This step involves confirming that the specimen was adequately sealed and dispatched, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any outstanding data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents the initial evaluation for potential drug exposure. Although Screening is an economical manner to exclude drug exposure in most cases, a positive Screening finding demands validation to hold up in legal proceedings. Presumable positives from Screening necessitate additional verification.

When a screening indicates a presumptive positive, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. In this segment, substances are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other modalities (e.g., urine or saliva), elucidating the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of a positive result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before verification as needed. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments detect drug usage spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a briefer detection window.
  • Challenge to falsify: Hair drug assessments are notably difficult to manipulate, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a trajectory of drug use over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: A period of 5-7 days is necessary before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expenses: Hair drug evaluations generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variances: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can modulate drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being colloquially termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle residing beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
