Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Smithfield, Kentucky. Specializing in hair drug or alcohol tests, we have centers across the nation, including all cities, to conduct these tests efficiently. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required, with options for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has been more commonly adopted for drug screening, favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over the usual urine tests. Employers maintaining zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation offices prefer hair tests for their longer detection window, up to 90 days, secure collection process, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain the best choice for detecting recent drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly considered an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken close to the scalp, hair can provide an approximate 90-day detection span for alcohol and other substances. It is straightforward to collect, harder to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp gives 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing. If scalp hair is absent, equivalent body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in a laboratory involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the sample's initial integration into the lab's system, encompassing confirmation that it was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing information not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use in most samples, positive screens require confirmation to be considered legally valid. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a secondary affirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. This stage involves removing drugs from the hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (like urine or saliva), which explains why hair testing is the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any screening positive is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days back, unlike the shorter duration of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair testing is difficult to tamper, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It outlines a drug use pattern over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent consumption: Drugs need about 5-7 days to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be pricier compared to other testing forms.
  • Outcome variability: Elements such as hair color and growth rate differences can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", it actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
