Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Sonora, Kentucky. For those in need of hair or alcohol testing, we are experts in hair analysis, with testing facilities in all cities across the country capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. Hair tests may examine substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made options.

Recently, the trend in drug testing has increasingly favored the hair follicle drug test. This method is now often mandated by employers, the judicial system, and substance abuse specialists over a conventional urine test. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation officers are among the users of hair tests. The main advantage is the extended detection window for drug use, up to 90 days, which is collected under supervision and is almost impossible to falsify. However, for detecting recent drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

The assessment of drug and alcohol consumption through hair testing is now considered an effective approach. Hair retains biomarkers within the developing hair's threads, offering a prolonged account of alcohol and other drug usage. Hair taken near the scalp may offer an approximately 90-day detection period for alcohol and other substances. It's straightforward to gather hair samples, somewhat challenging to tamper with them, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising about 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is recommended. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is advisable. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it is specifically scalp hair. Body hair includes all non-scalp types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug tests entails four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial transition of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step covers the verification of the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocation of a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of any extra data entry not given by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary evaluation for common substances. Though Screening is an economical means to dismiss drug usage in the majority of samples, any positive screenings must be validated to be permissible in court. Samples reported to be positive during Screening need subsequent confirmation.

In cases where a specimen shows potential positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and adjusted for Extraction. In this phase, the concentration of drugs pulled from hair is significantly lower compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is known to be one of the most meticulous methodologies.

For the Confirmation of positive screening outcomes, techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are utilized. All samples showing presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed against both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests may detect drug exposure for up to 90 days, contrasting with the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Tough to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Supplies historical record: It offers insights into usage patterns over time, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection limitation: Drugs typically become traceable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are often costlier than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Distinctions in hair color and personal hair growth rates can affect drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," the evaluation is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
