Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services throughout Sprout, Kentucky. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol assessments, our centers are equipped for precision testing. Available across all U.S. cities, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is typically required. Our analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Hair follicle drug testing has emerged as a preferred method in recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly choosing hair testing over the conventional urine test. With a longer detection period of up to 90 days, it ensures a meticulous collection method that is difficult to manipulate. Yet, for detecting recent use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the best choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands of hair capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use. When extracted near the scalp, hair can present nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement is suggested. In the absence of scalp hair, equivalent body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary processing of a specimen into the lab’s system. It involves ensuring proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial basic check for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is economically efficient for excluding drug use in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Any test with a presumptive positive in Screening needs further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive Screen result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from the hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are used for the Confirmation of any positive screening result. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed in compliance with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter timeline.
  • Reduced risk of manipulation: The difficulty of altering a hair drug test enhances accuracy of results.
  • Historical usage data: It offers a comprehensive pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments often incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand itself instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing trump urine testing in Sprout, KY? Primarily due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests identify substances over a more extended period and are less prone to tampering compared to traditional urine tests, offering a clearer representation of substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
