Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in St. Matthews, Kentucky. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our team at Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair assessments, with facilities in all cities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body, which may be utilized in many cases. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly featured hair follicle drug tests. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer hair drug testing over the conventional urine test. Hair follicle tests are utilized by employers with zero-tolerance drug use policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their longer detection period for substance use, typically up to 90 days, collected in an observed manner, and their resistance to tampering. However, when detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have evolved into a robust mechanism for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and narcotics by embedding biomarkers into the fibers of the growing strand. When procured near the scalp, hair can deliver roughly a 3-month period of detection for substances. The collection is easy, moderately tough to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect sample size for both screening and affirmation tests. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advise measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a similar amount of body hair may be gathered. Head hair references only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other sorts (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of integrating a sample into a lab’s system, which incorporates confirming the sample's seal and shipment, allotting a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and dealing with any extra data not provided by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening is a primary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be accepted in legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the sample for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g. urine or saliva), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening results require Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The whole lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes a review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests could identify drug use up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection timeframe of urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers usage patterns: It provides an account of drug consumption over time, unlike recent-only detection methods.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: It takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually costlier than other test forms.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently dubbed as "hair follicle tests", this evaluation involves analyzing the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In St. Matthews, KY, hair follicle testing is a superior choice compared to traditional urine testing, offering unmatched accuracy in drug detection. This method captures a longer usage history, providing employers with a detailed overview of an individual's substance use.

Unlike urine tests that offer shorter detection periods, hair tests cover up to 90 days of usage history, making them indispensable for employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals seeking robust testing solutions.

Additionally, hair testing is remarkably resistant to tampering, providing more reliable outcomes even in challenging situations, thereby solidifying its position as a preferred method over urinalysis.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing provides an extensive detection window in St. Matthews, KY, capturing drug use over an extensive period of up to 90 days. This comprehensive view allows employers to understand better an applicant's or employee's substance history.

This extended window is particularly advantageous for employers enforcing drug-free workplace policies, enabling them to assess long-term compliance among their employees or applicants.

By offering such a long detection duration, hair testing ensures that past substance use does not go unnoticed, providing a valuable tool for employers in maintaining a safe and compliant workforce.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
