Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in St. Regis Park, Kentucky. Specializing in hair tests, our centers accommodate both drugs and alcohol assessments nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, either from the scalp or body. These tests can identify a range of substances including drugs and alcohol through customizable options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have overtaken urine tests for their efficacy in drug screenings. Courts, employers, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests for zero-tolerance policies, providing a 90-day detection period. Conducted under observation, these tests are secure against tampering, though urine tests better identify substance use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has been recognized as an effective instrument for the identification of drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term records of alcohol and drugs by securing biomarkers in the strands of developing hair. When acquired near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to obtain, fairly resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section with roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for examination and validation. For EtG, additional options, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of processing a sample into the system of a laboratory. This phase ensures the sample was adequately sealed and delivered, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any auxiliary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be permissible in court. Any samples marked as potentially positive during Screening demand a secondary verification.

In scenarios where a sample is possibly positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potentially positive samples are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring the results' accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair development can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
