Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Sunnybrook, Kentucky. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2-inch hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair analysis can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer personalized hair testing solutions.

In recent years, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle tests. These are mandated by many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts instead of standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation rely on hair follicle tests. Key benefits include a drug use detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection, and difficulty to cheat. Yet, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent five-day drug use detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for detecting substance and alcohol intake. Hair retains a longitudinal record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the newly growing hair. When acquired near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for testing and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or analyses above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to weight the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is present, a corresponding amount of body hair may be used. Head hair specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four essential phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the preliminary processing of a specimen into the lab system. This step ensures that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entries not included by an electronic custody tracking system.

Screening offers an immediate preliminary examination for drug misuse. While Screening is an economical strategy to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples showing presumptive positives in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests as presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug tests present the highest difficulty to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples go through washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The overall lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed in line with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a briefer detection period.
  • Hardness to defraud: Cheating a hair drug test is notably tough, hence the outcomes are more reliable.
  • Supplies historical insights: It indicates a pattern of drug usage across time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis itself focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Sunnybrook, KY, hair follicle testing vastly outperforms urine tests. Advantages of hair testing include a longer detection window and less susceptibility to tampering. While urine tests detect recent use, hair testing reveals patterns over months, thus proving more effective for assessing ongoing drug use involvement.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Sunnybrook, KY offers a substantial advantage with its extended detection period. Unlike urine tests, hair analyses provide insights into drug use over the previous 90 days, giving a comprehensive view of individual behavior over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
