Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Three Forks, Kentucky. Specializing in hair tests, we maintain centers across all U.S. cities ready to conduct these tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair, our tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are favoring this over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance workplaces and legal scenarios benefit from its extensive 90-day detection period, collected under direct supervision, making cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain most effective for spotting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly viewed as a crucial method for identifying consumption of substances like drugs and alcohol. It offers a long-term record of substance intake by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a drug or alcohol pattern for nearly three months. It is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

An ideal sample for analysis and confirmation involves a 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hairs (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp, providing 100mg of hair. For EtG tests, add-ons, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg is preferred. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, the same quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main stages in the lab processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab system. This step involves checking for correct sample sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data input not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary evaluation for drug presence. Even though Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed to stand in a legal scenario. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is taken from the original collection for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis one of the more challenging methodologies.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques carry out Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes. All samples deemed presumptively positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can trace drug use for up to 90 days, contrasted with the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to tamper: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use over an extended period, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Detectable drug presence in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs more costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Despite being sometimes labeled "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on analyzing the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Three Forks, KY, the advantages of hair follicle testing over urine testing are clear. Hair tests offer a greater detection window and are remarkably resistant to tampering. Employers favor them due to their reliability in upholding zero-tolerance policies.

Hair sampling's longer detection period provides a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance history, unlike urine tests which only reveal recent usage. This makes hair testing a preferred choice in various contexts.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Three Forks, KY, is a significant advantage, capturing drug use history over a 90-day period. This allows employers to assess an individual's long-term substance use patterns comprehensively.

Such an extended timeline is vital for making informed hiring and employment decisions, ensuring the workplace remains safe and compliant with drug-free policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
