Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Trent, Kentucky. If you're seeking a hair or alcohol drug test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair analysis, with numerous centers across the nation capable of conducting tests. Ideally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for most tests. Hair analysis can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

In recent years, drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle examinations are chosen by those with zero-tolerance policies for drug use, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The major advantage of hair tests is the extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that's almost impossible to subvert. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved into a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate detection timeframe of up to 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for testing and verification. For EtG tests, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount from body hair can be utilized. The term "head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s system, including confirmation that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening finding is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Varying results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Trent, KY, hair follicle testing is proving to be superior to traditional urine tests. The benefits include longer detection windows and heightened reliability, making it harder to manipulate results. Employers and legal entities find hair analysis a robust alternative to urine testing.

Comparatively, hair testing offers unparalleled accuracy and less potential for tampering. This method delivers trustworthy results, reinforcing zero-tolerance drug policies effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
