For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, it is suggested to provide 150mg of the specimen. The specimen should ideally be weighed with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, the same quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. All other types are classified as body hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four essential stages in the laboratory process of drug test analysis: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is entered into the lab's system. It involves confirming that the sample was sealed and transported appropriately, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addressing any extra data entry required that isn't covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary, swift check for drug presence. Although Screening is a budget-friendly way to dismiss drug usage in most samples, any positive results must be confirmed to be permissible in court. Samples that are initially positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample shows a positive result in the Screening step, additional hair is taken from the first specimen and processed for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a concentration lower than in some other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a challenging process.

Any positive screening must be confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Before confirmation, all presumptively positive samples are washed. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.
