Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Vancleve, Kentucky. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing. With centers spread across all cities nationwide, we can efficiently conduct hair tests requiring a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches, usually from the head or body. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate custom testing needs.

Recently, the trend in drug testing methodology increasingly favors hair follicle over urine tests. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists often request hair tests as they replace conventional urine testing. These tests appeal to employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation departments. Key advantages include extended detection up to 90 days, observed non-tamperable collection, and resilience against manipulation. However, for identifying recent drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

Regarded increasingly, hair testing serves as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures prolonged records of alcohol and other substances by entrapping biomarkers within the hair’s evolving fibers. Positioned close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe extending to around 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. It’s straightforward to gather, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A scalp-near sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for assessment and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen quantity of 150mg is advisable. It’s suggested to measure the sample via a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is absent, a parallel quantity of body hair can be utilized. The term 'head hair' specifically denotes scalp hair. 'Body hair' indicates all other varieties (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary procedures in processing drug test outcomes at the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial session of a sample within the laboratory's framework. This phase confirms the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and updates any necessary data not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid examination for illicit substances. Though Screening offers a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome requires verification to hold in legal proceedings. Presumptive positives identified during Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original collection to prepare for Extraction. Here, drug compounds are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other practices (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive from Screening occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing pre-Confirmation as required. The full laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug utilization for up to 90 days, contrary to the limited detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenging to tamper: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceptionally hard, which enhances the precision of results.
  • Depicts usage history: This method reflects patterns of substance use over time, extending beyond immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Price: Hair drug tests generally involve higher expenses compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this analysis targets the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
