In Villa Hills, Kentucky, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. For those requiring a drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair analysis, with testing centers nationwide that conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffice. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific analyses.

The application of hair follicle drug testing has escalated over recent years. Employers, the judicial system, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. This method appeals to employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal entities, and probation cases. Its chief advantage is a broader detection window, spanning up to 90 days, and it is nearly foolproof to circumvent, though for recent drug use, within the last five days, urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe reaching up to roughly three months for alcohol and drug usage. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipping is simple.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising approximately 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or when conducting tests above 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for specimen weighing is suggested. Should scalp hair be nonexistent, an equivalent volume of body hair may be gathered. Reference to head hair strictly indicates scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure to produce a drug test result comprises four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This process includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary inspection for drugs of abuse. While Screening is cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In instances where a sample is preliminarily positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

For Confirmation of any positive screening result, methods employed include GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed as necessary before Confirmation. Every stage of the laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the oversight of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are exceptionally resistant to tampering, ensuring more precise results.
  • Delivers historical insights: Offers a timeline of drug use patterns over extended periods, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the assessment focuses on analyzing the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
