In Water Valley, Kentucky, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our widespread facilities nationwide cater to your needs. With 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body, hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing requests.

The adoption of hair follicle drug tests has increased among employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. This method, often preferred over urine tests, suits zero-tolerance policies and situations involving probation. A key advantage is the extended 90-day detection window, conducted in a supervised setting, making it highly difficult to tamper with. Yet, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain most pertinent.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers an extended timeline for alcohol and drug detection. A sample taken near the scalp can reveal up to a 3-month usage history of alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, with limited opportunity for tampering, and it is easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment from around 200 hair strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is an optimal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weight of 150mg is suggested. To ensure accuracy, weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory workflow for drug test results includes four critical stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory system, involving verification of proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing pending data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening is economical for eliminating drug use in most samples, to be court-admissible, a confirmation of a positive screen is necessary. Samples that exhibit presumptive positives during Screening must undergo subsequent confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS technologies. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positives are washed as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Resilience against tampering: Cheating in hair drug tests proves extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal drug usage patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
