Located in Waverly, Kentucky, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. We specialize in various hair tests, including those for drug and alcohol use, with many testing centers nationwide. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in recent years among employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists, while replacing traditional urine tests. They particularly appeal to employers with strict drug-free policies, probation services, and courts. A key advantage of hair testing is its extended drug detection window, typically up to 90 days, with observed collection, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, urine tests still offer the most precise results for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by encasing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. It's easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory steps to process a drug test result encompass four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This process ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be legally valid. Any samples presumed positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If the Screening stage yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. At this point, drugs are sourced from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Any positive results from screening are verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation, when necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: It is notably difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can outline a pattern of substance use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle found under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
