Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Weir, KY. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities in cities nationwide to handle these needs. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is required for testing. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug analyses. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance for drug use, judiciary systems, and individuals on probation frequently employ hair follicle tests. The primary advantage of these tests lies in their extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected through an observed collection process, making tampering almost impossible. However, for screening drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a long-term history of substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair samples are taken from near the scalp, they offer as much as a three-month detection period for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional analyses, or more than 10-panel screens, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is advisable. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair pertain strictly to scalp hair, whereas body hair refers to other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the laboratory validation of a drug analysis: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial registration of a sample into the lab's database. This step verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entries not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive findings must be validated to be applicable in court. Samples that test positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If results are positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to carry out.

Confirmation of positive screening findings is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is overseen under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and compliant with ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which typically have a shorter window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating in a hair drug test proves to be very challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It projects a timeline of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Even though they're often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually evaluates the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Weir, KY, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in numerous ways. Superior detection accuracy over a longer period is a notable benefit. While urine tests might detect recent drug use, hair tests offer insights up to 90 days.
Reliability is another advantage, as hair tests are nearly impossible to tamper with, unlike urine tests that can be influenced by various factors.

Extended Detection Window

One of the significant advantages of hair follicle testing in Weir, KY is its extended detection window. Unlike other methods that offer limited timeframes, these tests can trace drug use up to 90 days back. This extended period provides employers a broader understanding of a candidate's or current employee's substance history, aiding in making informed decisions regarding employment suitability.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests offer a tamper-resistant method in Weir, KY, minimizing the chances of sample manipulation. Unlike urine tests that can be adulterated, hair testing provides results that are both reliable and difficult to dispute.
This feature ensures valid outcomes, maintaining the integrity of the testing process, and is particularly beneficial for zero-tolerance policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
