Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in West Louisville, Kentucky. For anyone needing a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we excel in hair testing with centers across all major U.S. cities ready to deliver a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Analyses can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing needs.

Over the years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly replaced traditional methods. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists often opt for hair tests in lieu of standard urine assessments. These hair tests suit zero-tolerance policies, probationary requirements, and legal environments. Their primary advantage is a lengthy detection window, often up to 90 days, with supervised sample collection, making tampering nearly impossible. For drug use within recent days, however, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an efficient method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of developing hair, hair offers a long-standing record of substance use. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easily transportable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is beneficial. If scalp hair isn't accessible, the same amount of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test entails four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary processing stage, where a sample is integrated into a lab's system. This step involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for drugs. Though cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, any positive result from Screening requires confirmation for legal purposes. Samples testing positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair testing the most challenging methodology to implement.

Confirming any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before any confirmation, presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The complete lab process, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation criteria of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have the capability to detect drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Cheating is challenging: The difficulty of deceiving a hair drug test results in more accurate findings.
  • Historical insights: Hair tests can reveal a timeline of drug usage, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Drugs become noticeable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses tend to be costlier than other forms of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth disparities can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle itself under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
